Letter 20: Discrimination Based on Sex or Marital Status in the Granting of Credit
As you are undoubtedly aware, Section 138.20, Wisconsin Statutes, was created and
became effective on August 3, 1973; it prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex or
marital status in the granting or extension of credit. This letter will serve to remind
you that adequate files should be maintained to enable this office to fully investigate
any and all complaints alleging violations of the above cited statute. You will also note
that the statute provides for a severe monetary penalty in case of violation. This office
urges strict compliance with the statute and will exert every effort toward achieving such
compliance.
