Governor's Council on Financial Literacy Holds Inaugural Meeting

(Madison) The Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy (GCFL), created earlier this year by Governor Scott Walker, held its inaugural meeting today at the Executive Residence.  Its mission is to measurably improve the financial literacy of Wisconsin’s citizens.

“Each member of this team brings a great resume and came highly recommended,” said Governor Walker.  “I look forward to learning the council’s vision for improving financial literacy in Wisconsin.”

William E. Wilcox, President of the CBM Credit Education Foundation, Inc. serves as GCFL chair while Wisconsin Commissioner of Insurance Ted Nickel and Secretary Peter Bildsten of the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) serve as co-vice chairs.  DFI’s Office of Financial Literacy will provide administrative support to the 25-member body.  Members include individuals from higher education, nonprofits, business, government and academia.

Council members heard presentations about the state of financial literacy in Wisconsin, financial literacy capacity building and Wisconsin’s deficit in teaching K-12 students personal finance and economics.  Initially, the GCFL will focus on four actions:

  • Developing and implementing a program to provide employers with tools that efficiently help employees measurably increase their financial literacy.
  • Growing the statewide financial literacy awareness and education campaign entitled Money Smart Week Wisconsin by increasing the number of communities and participants involved.
  • Expanding financial literacy teacher-training opportunities by working collaboratively with the Department of Public Instruction, the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, Wisconsin’s National Institute of Financial and Economic Literacy and other partners to measure the number of students being taught.
  • Convening a summit on financial literacy with defined deliverables to improve financial literacy in Wisconsin.
